Nanofiber Air Filtration: The Frontline Defense Against African Swine Fever in Modern Pig Farming
The Frontline Defense Against African Swine Fever in Modern Pig Farming
African Swine Fever (ASF) is an acute, highly contagious viral disease with an almost 100% fatality rate in domestic and wild pigs. With no effective vaccine and no specific treatment available, the only truly reliable way to reduce risk is simple but critical—cut off the transmission routes.
While most biosecurity protocols focus on feed, personnel, and vehicle disinfection, growing evidence now points to airborne transmission as the overlooked weak link in ASF prevention systems.

1. Airborne Transmission: The Ignored Infection Pathway

ASF virus particles are approximately 200 nanometers in diameter. They can attach to dust or aerosols, remaining viable in the air for hours—or even longer.
In high-density pig farms, air intakes, exhaust fans, and negative-pressure ducts may all act as “highways” for virus-laden air. Research shows that ASFV can travel several kilometers through dust-containing aerosols. Without effective filtration in the ventilation system, even farms with perfect ground-level biosecurity remain exposed.
Traditional coarse or medium-efficiency filters (such as polyester or nonwoven pads) fail to capture aerosol particles in the 0.3–1 μm range, leaving a wide gap for airborne viruses to pass through.

2. Nanofiber Filtration: Redefining Airborne Biosecurity

Nanofiltech employs advanced electrospinning technology to create nanofiber air filter media. These filters feature a uniform nanofiber web layer with fiber diameters between 100–300 nanometers, forming a true surface filtration structure—capturing contaminants on the surface rather than deep inside the media.
Key performance advantages:
  • l Filtration efficiency up to ≥99.997% (HEPA H14) for 0.3 μm particles
  • Low pressure drop, ensuring stable airflow and reduced fan energy consumption
  • Moisture and ammonia pressure drop, ideal for humid, high-ammonia pig houses
  • Extended service life, minimizing replacement frequency
·
The nanofiber layer effectively targets the 0.3–2 μm aerosol size range—precisely the range in which ASFV-carrying aerosols exist—forming a solid airborne defense barrier for livestock facilities.

3. Application in Pig Farms: Blocking Infection at the Air Inlet

When installed in air inlets, ventilation systems, air handling units (AHUs), or air curtain systems, Nanofiltech’s NAFIL-V series nanofiber air filters create a multi-layer biosecurity shield:
1. Isolate external virus sources: Prevent virus-laden aerosols or dust from entering the barn.
2. Reduce cross-zone contamination: Block airflow transmission between different housing areas.
3. Protect nursery zones: Maintain cleaner, more stable air quality for piglet development.
4. Extend equipment lifespan: Reduce dust buildup and improve fan and duct efficiency.
In multiple demonstration farms across China, including large-scale breeding and nursery facilities equipped with H13-grade HEPA nanofiber panel filters, test results showed remarkable improvements:
  • l Detectable ASFV DNA in air samples dropped significantly
  • l Dust concentration inside barns decreased by over 75%
Overall biosecurity level greatly improvedNotably, in six farms in Shandong Province monitored throughout 2023, ASF outbreaks were reduced to zero after integrating nanofiber-based filtration at air inlets.

4. Toward a New Normal in Livestock Biosecurity

In today’s high-density, high-risk livestock industry, air filtration has evolved from a secondary measure into a core element of biosecurity management. From isolating external virus intrusion to minimizing internal bacterial load, filtration is no longer optional—it’s essential.
Using Nanofiltech’s self-developed NANOAIR nanofiber filtration media, the NAFIL-V and NAFIL-P series air filters combine high filtration efficiency, low energy consumption, and customizable designs to help farms:
  • l Shift from reactive control to proactive prevention
  • l Upgrade from single-point defense to systematic air safety management
  • l Transition from traditional ventilation to integrated smart filtration + energy-efficient airflow

Future-proof pig farming isn’t just about keeping pigs alive—it’s about keeping the air clean enough for them to thrive.
Nanofiltech will continue advancing livestock biosecurity through nanotechnology, ensuring that every breath in the barn is a safer one.
